Experience

Sam is a registered psychologist specialising in leadership coaching, psychosocial support and professional supervision. He has over 20 years' experience in the not-for-profit sector, the first 10 years at a UK probation service, where he held frontline, supervisory, training, managerial and policy development roles. In 2000, he migrated to New Zealand where he has held both employee and contractor roles for the departments of Corrections, Police, Education, Health, and Social Development. He is also engaged by private sector and humanitarian organisations.

Sam’s experience of working in large, multi-disciplinary organisations with complex systems of culture, history and practice means he has a comprehensive understanding of what engages staff commitment. Whether coaching individuals or groups, his approach is both structured and dynamic, demonstrating an applied ability to identify, capture and build motivation to change, whilst being responsive to the nuances of individual difference and ability. He models a calm, good humoured approach that enables clients to trust in their own ability to make considered decisions in challenging contexts.

Sam is passionate about expanding his own learning horizons. He regularly adds to his professional development and has travelled and/or worked in over 50 countries. He believes this has significantly contributed to the ease with which he engages with and facilitates the development of his own and others’ preparedness to ‘look over the edge and have faith in the next step’.

Sam has written for professional publications on supervision and coaching psychology. He has also presented on coaching psychology at conferences in New Zealand, Australia and South Africa. Other areas of his life where he is still a learner include parenting, playing, physical exercise, marriage and mindfulness.
